Visit FileForums I definitely want to try more games like this now (Mario and Rabbids and XCOM are on my list). It regularly goes on sale for Switch and Steam every few months. Give this game a try if you liked the world in the other SteamWorld games, or if you want a manageable game in a somewhat intimidating genre. Surprisingly, the game gets easier in the last third act, but not too easy. I played the vast majority of the game on experienced (the third level of difficulty), and was not often frustrated at the game, only myself for making stupid errors because I wasn't paying attention. Don't be mistaken though, the gameplay and characters are definitely the pull here, over a fairly whatever story that is supplemented by the game's charm. I'm usually not a fan of having to pick between difficulties as opposed to a set difficulty, but I appreciated the fact that they implemented a "casual" difficulty so it was possible to progress for those who were struggling, and for those who wanted to see the story develop. The game features 5 difficulty levels (from casual to elite). The feeling of progress you get by improving your previous attempt at a level or leveling up your character is great. I went with fairly simple characters to avoid overcomplicating things (Piper, Bogdan, Fen, and Seabrass) but there is a cool variety of characters, including a fish guy who fights melee that I want to try out. The characters are likeable, and the game offers many ways to play. This is coming from a guy who still doesn't fully understand chess, so you understand my hesitation. I played the game for an hour years ago, but got distracted and probably thought it would get too hard. I've had this game in my library for a few years, and enjoyed the gameplay and aesthetic of SteamWorld Dig a lot.
When you lose a level, chances are you made an important mistake. Levels are mostly procedurally generated, but they don't feel unfair unlike some roguelikes. There is little RNG, no "95% chance to hit" nonsense (there is crit chance with headshots). SteamWorld Heist is a 2D turn-based tactic shooter, which basically means it's like XCOM but 2D and the shooting is based on angles.
